India’s young batting star Shafali Verma has been named ICC Women’s Player of the Month for November 2025, following her decisive and match-winning performance in the Women’s ODI World Cup final against South Africa.

The 21-year-old opener played a central role in India lifting their maiden Women’s World Cup title, marking a defining moment in her international career.

World Cup Final That Defined the Award

Shafali’s selection for the monthly honour was driven by her composed yet aggressive innings of 87 runs off 78 balls in the World Cup final held in Navi Mumbai.

It was the highest score by an Indian opener in a Women’s World Cup final and laid a solid foundation for India’s total of 298 for 7.

Her ability to balance controlled aggression with maturity under pressure allowed India to dominate the big stage and eventually secure a 52-run victory.

Opening alongside Smriti Mandhana, Shafali stitched together a crucial 104-run partnership, setting the tone for the innings.

The stand not only neutralised South Africa’s new-ball attack but also gave India the momentum required in a high-stakes final in front of a packed home crowd.

Comeback Story Under Pressure

Shafali’s journey in the tournament was equally remarkable. She was drafted into the playing XI as a replacement for the injured Pratika Rawal during the semi-final against Australia.

With limited room for error, the young batter seized her opportunity and carried that confidence into the final. Her calm approach and fearless stroke play reflected her growth as a player who could thrive in high-pressure situations.

Beyond her batting contribution, Shafali also made an impact in the field, breaking South Africa’s momentum at key moments and underlining her value as a complete match-winner.

Recognition and Reactions

Reacting to the honour, Shafali described the award as a collective achievement rather than an individual milestone. She credited her teammates, coaching staff and family for their unwavering support throughout the tournament.

Reflecting on the World Cup campaign, she admitted that while the journey did not begin as planned, the ending exceeded all expectations.

Shafali edged out Thailand’s Thipatcha Putthawong and UAE’s Esha Oza to claim her first ICC Player of the Month award, highlighting her standout impact during the month.

Men’s Award and Broader Significance

South Africa’s Simon Harmer was named ICC Player of the Month after playing a pivotal role in South Africa’s 2–0 Test series victory over India.

Harmer claimed 17 wickets at an impressive average of 8.94, guiding his side to their first Test series win in India in 25 years.

Shafali Verma’s recognition, however, symbolises a broader moment for Indian women’s cricket. Her rise, resilience and performance on the biggest stage underline the growing depth and confidence in the women’s game, making her award both timely and historic.
