West Indies Win by 107 Runs in Super 8 Opener

West Indies dominantly began their Super 8 campaign with a commanding 107-run victory over Zimbabwe at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

Powered by a breathtaking innings from Shimron Hetmyer, the Caribbean side registered 254 for 6, the second-highest team total in T20 World Cup history.

After being asked to bat first, West Indies handled the early phase carefully before launching an aggressive counterattack. Hetmyer shifted the momentum completely with a stunning 85 off just 34 balls, lighting up the contest.

His innings included seven fours and seven sixes, and he reached his half-century in only 19 deliveries, the fastest by a West Indian batter in T20 World Cup history. Skipper Rovman Powell provided strong support with a quickfire 59 as the pair added 122 runs in rapid time, putting Zimbabwe under immense pressure.

The acceleration did not stop after their dismissal. Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd added valuable late runs to push the total beyond the 250 mark, the first 250-plus score of this edition.

Zimbabwe bowlers Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani picked up two wickets each but struggled to control the flow of runs.

Chasing a massive target, Zimbabwe never found stability. Early wickets derailed their innings, and scoreboard pressure continued to build. Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie produced a decisive spell, finishing with figures of 4 for 28.

Fellow spinner Akeal Hosein chipped in with three important wickets, dismantling the middle order.

Brad Evans showed some resistance with a brisk 43 off 21 balls, but Zimbabwe were eventually bowled out for 147 in 17.4 overs. The result handed the West Indies one of their biggest wins of the tournament in terms of runs.

With five consecutive victories, the West Indies are building serious momentum in the competition. Their explosive batting depth and disciplined bowling attack highlight their strong intent as they strengthen their position in the middle phase of the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, pushing confidently toward the knockout rounds.
