The IPL 2026 clash between Virat Kohli and Travis Head became one of the most talked-about moments of the season after a heated on-field exchange during the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad.
The controversy erupted during RCB’s chase of a massive 256-run target set by SRH. Kohli and Head were seen exchanging words in the middle overs, with the RCB opener appearing visibly animated.
Reports later revealed that Kohli challenged Head to bowl after mocking the Australian star over the “Impact Player” role, a tactic SRH often uses with Head during matches.
Kohli’s stay at the crease, however, was short-lived as he scored 15 runs off 11 balls before being dismissed inside the powerplay. Head later made an impact with the ball as well by dismissing RCB captain Rajat Patidar during the chase.
The drama intensified after the match when players lined up for the customary handshakes. Kohli greeted SRH captain Pat Cummins and opener Abhishek Sharma but walked past Head despite the Australian extending his hand.
The moment quickly went viral across social media, sparking debates among cricket fans and experts.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan later explained the incident during commentary, stating that the verbal banter escalated on the field before the handshake snub occurred. While defending aggressive cricket, Irfan admitted the post-match moment “could have been avoided.”
Despite the controversy, both teams sealed playoff qualification in IPL 2026. RCB finished at the top of the points table due to a superior net run rate and will now face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1. Meanwhile, SRH secured third place and will play the Eliminator.
The Kohli-Head incident has added another fiery chapter to IPL rivalries, with fans continuing to debate whether the handshake refusal crossed the line or was simply part of high-pressure competitive cricket.
