Star all-rounder Riyan Parag is set to be appointed as the new Rajasthan Royals captain ahead of the IPL 2026 season.
The decision comes after Sanju Samson’s move to Chennai Super Kings, leaving the Jaipur-based franchise in search of a new leader.
Following internal discussions led by head coach Kumar Sangakkara, the Royals have reportedly finalised Parag as their preferred candidate to guide the team in the upcoming campaign.
Parag, 24, is no stranger to leadership responsibilities. He captained Rajasthan Royals in eight matches during IPL 2025 when Samson was unavailable due to injury.
Although the team managed only two wins during that period, Parag impressed with his composure and batting consistency. He averaged 38.57 in those games, including a career-best 95 against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
Parag brings valuable domestic leadership experience. The Guwahati-born cricketer has long captained Assam in domestic cricket, earning praise for his fearless approach and tactical awareness across formats.
As Rajasthan Royals begin shaping their core group for IPL 2026 players, Parag’s experience and maturity make him a central figure in the franchise’s long-term plans for the upcoming season.
His performances in recent seasons have also elevated his reputation as one of the franchise’s core players.
Since making his IPL debut in 2019, Parag has played exclusively for Rajasthan Royals. In the 2024 edition, he enjoyed his most productive season, scoring 573 runs at an average above 50 and a strike rate close to 150.
Overall, he has featured in 84 matches for the franchise, accumulating more than 1500 runs and contributing with the ball when required.
Rajasthan Royals will be aiming to revive their fortunes in IPL 2026 after finishing near the bottom of the table last season.
The franchise last lifted the IPL trophy in 2008 and has been searching for consistent success since then. With the official schedule for IPL 2026 expected soon, the Royals appear ready to begin a new chapter under Parag’s leadership.
