Indian cricket has witnessed many inspiring journeys, but behind every success story stands a silent pillar of strength. For Rinku Singh, that pillar was his father, Khanchand Singh, who passed away early Friday morning after a prolonged battle with stage-four liver cancer. He was 60.
Khanchand Singh breathed his last at Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida at approximately 4:36 AM, where he had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Hospital officials confirmed that his condition had worsened significantly in recent days, and he had been on ventilator support.
Despite sustained medical intervention and specialist care, doctors were unable to reverse the damage caused by advanced liver cancer.
The timing of this tragedy makes it even more painful. Rinku Singh is currently part of India’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, a tournament that represents the pinnacle of T20 cricket.
Sources indicate that Rinku had briefly stepped away from training to be by his father’s side during his critical phase before rejoining the national camp. Upon receiving the heartbreaking news, he immediately left Chennai to return to Aligarh for the final rites.
Those who have followed Rinku’s journey know that his rise to international cricket was built on resilience and sacrifice. Khanchand Singh worked as a gas cylinder deliveryman, often enduring long hours to provide for his family.
In multiple interviews, Rinku has spoken about assisting his father with deliveries during financially challenging times. The family’s limited resources never diminished their belief in his cricketing dreams. Instead, it strengthened their resolve.
The cricketing fraternity reacted with deep sorrow. Former India stars Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh publicly expressed condolences, acknowledging both the personal loss and Rinku’s unwavering commitment to the national team during a testing period.
Khanchand Singh’s mortal remains were brought to Aligarh, where the cremation ceremony will be conducted in the presence of family members and close associates. Beyond statistics and scorecards, this moment serves as a reminder that athletes carry personal battles alongside professional responsibilities.
