The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) is set to introduce a new franchise-based tournament, the Punjab Premier League (PPL), with its inaugural edition expected in June 2026.
The move aims to redefine domestic cricket in the state by providing a stronger commercial structure and greater exposure for emerging players.
According to the PCA’s official plans, the league will replace the existing state T20 competition and feature six franchise-owned teams in its opening season.
The initiative is designed to create a competitive environment similar to other successful state-level T20 tournaments across India while strengthening Punjab’s grassroots cricket system.
One of the biggest highlights of the proposed league is the possibility of participation from prominent Indian cricketers such as Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, and Arshdeep Singh, subject to availability.
Their involvement would significantly boost the tournament’s visibility and attract nationwide attention.
Apart from international stars, established Punjab players including Ramandeep Singh, Nehal Wadhera, Anmolpreet Singh, and Prabhsimran Singh are also expected to be part of the competition.
Emerging U-19 talents such as Vihaan Malhotra could receive a valuable platform to showcase their skills at a higher level.
The PCA has indicated that players will enter a structured draft system, followed by an auction process similar to the Indian Premier League (IPL), with several names already being discussed in connection with the IPL 2026 Auction Players pool.
Cricketers will be categorized into different price brackets, and franchises will bid to assemble competitive squads. While full details of the auction mechanism are yet to be released, the format aims to ensure transparency and competitive balance.
With its launch, the Punjab Premier League will join the growing ecosystem of state-based tournaments in India, including the KSCA Maharaja Trophy, Kerala Cricket League, Delhi Premier League T20, Puducherry Premier League, and Bengal T20 Pro.
The PPL is expected to play a crucial role in expanding opportunities for Punjab’s cricketers and strengthening the state’s presence in India’s domestic cricket landscape.
