Pathirana Suffers Calf Injury in Australia Clash

Sri Lanka suffered an injury scare during their T20 World Cup 2026 clash against Australia as pace spearhead Matheesha Pathirana limped off the field with a left calf injury at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

The 23-year-old pulled up sharply in his follow-through while delivering the fourth ball of his opening over. He immediately clutched his left leg and went down in discomfort, forcing medical staff to rush onto the field.

After receiving on-field treatment, Pathirana was helped off and did not return to bowl in the Sri Lanka vs Australia T20 World Cup clash.

Official Update on Pathirana’s Injury

Sri Lanka Cricket later confirmed that the fast bowler experienced discomfort in his left calf and would not continue in the match. A scan has been scheduled to determine the severity of the injury.

The team management is expected to provide a detailed update after the medical assessment.

Before walking off, Pathirana had started positively, bowling two dot balls and conceding just three runs, including a wide. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka completed the over, which ended with a boundary and a dot ball.

Sri Lanka Already Dealing With Injury Concerns

The latest setback adds to Sri Lanka’s growing injury list. Star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga had already been ruled out of the tournament earlier due to injury.

Any extended absence for Pathirana would be a major blow, especially given his role as the team’s primary death overs specialist.

Sri Lanka Seal Super Eights Spot

Despite the injury concern, Sri Lanka produced a strong performance to defeat Australia by eight wickets. Australia were bowled out for 181, with contributions from Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head.

In response, Pathum Nissanka scored an unbeaten century to guide Sri Lanka to 184 for 2 in 18 overs, securing qualification for the Super Eights stage.

However, the focus now shifts to Pathirana’s fitness. With crucial matches ahead in the T20 World Cup 2026, Sri Lanka will hope their pace spearhead recovers quickly to strengthen their bowling attack.
