The Mumbai Indians have signed Keshav Maharaj as a replacement for Mitchell Santner, who has been ruled out of IPL 2026 due to a shoulder injury.
Santner suffered the injury during a match against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium while attempting a diving catch near the boundary.
Although he completed the catch, he landed awkwardly and injured his shoulder, forcing him off the field. He was later seen with an ice pack, and the team confirmed he would miss the remainder of the tournament.
The New Zealand all-rounder had been in solid form, picking up five wickets in four matches at an economy rate of 8.92. His absence comes as a setback for the Mumbai Indians, who have struggled for consistency this season.
To fill the gap, Mumbai has brought in experienced left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj. The South African brings significant T20 experience, having taken 191 wickets in over 200 matches across various leagues worldwide.
Known for his control and ability to bowl in pressure situations, Maharaj is expected to strengthen MI’s bowling attack in the middle overs.
He also impressed in the recent SA20 season, leading Pretoria Capitals to the final and finishing with 12 wickets. His ability to maintain a tight economy rate makes him a valuable addition to a side looking to regain balance.
Currently placed near the bottom of the points table, the Mumbai Indians will be hoping Maharaj can make an immediate impact as they aim to turn their campaign around in the second half of IPL 2026.
