Lizelle Lee Fined for Code of Conduct Breach in WPL

Delhi Capitals opener Lizelle Lee has been fined 10 percent of her match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching the Women’s Premier League (WPL) Code of Conduct during her side’s match against the Mumbai Indians at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara.

The incident occurred during a tense phase of Delhi’s run chase and drew significant attention due to the prolonged on-field deliberations that followed.

The moment unfolded in the 11th over of Delhi Capitals’ innings when Lee was adjudged stumped off the bowling of Amanjot Kaur.

Attempting a flick down the leg side, Lee appeared to lose her balance slightly, allowing wicketkeeper Rahila Firdous to remove the bails.

What followed was a lengthy third-umpire review, with officials examining multiple replays, including footage from the stump camera.

After careful consideration, the decision was upheld, with replays showing Lee’s bat marginally off the ground when the bails were dislodged.

Lee, who was batting confidently on 46 from 28 deliveries, was visibly frustrated with the decision.

Her reaction on the field and subsequent exchange with the umpires led to a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the WPL Code of Conduct, which relates to the abuse of cricket equipment.

According to the league’s official statement, Lee admitted to the breach and accepted the sanction, making the match referee’s ruling final and binding.

Despite the controversy surrounding her dismissal, Delhi Capitals ultimately emerged victorious.

Captain Jemimah Rodrigues played a crucial anchoring role, returning to form with an unbeaten 51 off 37 balls to guide her team to a comfortable seven-wicket win while chasing a target of 155.

After the match, Lee chose to keep her public comments measured, acknowledging the quality of the wicketkeeping effort rather than dwelling on the decision.

In a separate interaction shared on WPL’s social media channels, the South African batter also spoke about her interest in umpiring after retirement, revealing that she has already begun exploring the role and finds it enjoyable.

Lee added that while long-term ambitions, including future Olympic cricket, remain exciting, her immediate focus continues to be on performing consistently at the highest level.

The incident, while momentarily overshadowing her fluent knock, highlighted the intense emotions and competitive edge that define the Women’s Premier League.
