Kevin Pietersen Says ECB Ended His Career Over IPL

Kevin Pietersen has made a bold claim about his international career, alleging that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) forced him out due to his strong support for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Speaking on ‘The Ranveer Show’, the former England captain said his backing of the IPL created tensions with cricket authorities that ultimately led to his early exit from international cricket.

Pietersen, who played 104 Tests for England, believes his career ended prematurely at the age of 33. He stated that he could have gone on to play 150 or more Tests and scored over 12,000 runs, but claims his stance on the IPL put him at odds with the ECB.

According to Pietersen, his support for the league was not well received at a time when England’s cricket establishment was cautious about player participation in franchise tournaments.

Reflecting on that phase, Kevin Pietersen described his decision as a sacrifice, adding that it paved the way for future generations of English players to thrive in the IPL.

Today, several England stars are regulars in the league, earning lucrative contracts and gaining global exposure, something Pietersen believes he helped make possible.

The former Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain also hinted at tensions with the ECB during his playing days, claiming that external narratives and media pressure contributed to the breakdown of his international career.

Despite the controversy, he said he now looks back at the experience as a learning phase.

Pietersen also highlighted the intense pressure faced by players in the IPL, comparing it to international cricket. He pointed to Indian stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah, stating that the expectations on them are significantly higher than in most international setups.

While Pietersen’s claims revisit a long-standing debate, they also highlight the evolving relationship between international boards and franchise leagues in modern cricket, with increasing focus on ECB sanctions, player regulations, and franchise league policies shaping the game’s future.
