Mumbai Indians have suffered a significant setback in their Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 campaign, with wicketkeeper-batter G Kamalini ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injury.
The development was officially confirmed by the WPL on Tuesday, dealing a blow to the two-time champions at a crucial stage of the tournament.
Kamalini, who featured in five matches this season, had been an important part of the Mumbai Indians setup before her untimely injury.
While the franchise did not disclose the exact nature of the issue, her absence will be keenly felt as the league phase heads toward its decisive stages.
In response, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side has named left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma as Kamalini’s replacement for the remainder of the tournament.
According to the official WPL release, the Mumbai Indians have signed Vaishnavi Sharma for a sum of Rs 30 lakh. The young spinner arrives with an impressive résumé despite her age.
Vaishnavi was a key member of India’s historic triumph at the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in 2025, where she impressed with her control and temperament on the big stage.
Vaishnavi has also begun to make her mark at the senior international level, having represented India in five T20I matches and claimed five wickets while showing composure in pressure situations.
Her inclusion adds variety and depth to the Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack, where she will work closely under the guidance of spin-bowling coach Kristen Beams as the side looks to regain momentum after a mixed start to the season.
The defending champions have endured an inconsistent WPL 2026 campaign so far, managing just two wins from five matches.
Despite suffering back-to-back defeats against UP Warriorz, the Mumbai Indians currently sit second on the points table, largely due to their superior net run rate of +0.151.
With four points to their name, the team remains firmly in contention for a playoff spot.
Mumbai Indians will next face Delhi Capitals in their sixth league match at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi.
With three league games remaining before the playoffs, the upcoming fixture presents an opportunity for the side to bounce back and stabilize their campaign.
Notably, both Kamalini and Vaishnavi Sharma have been rewarded for their recent performances with maiden ODI call-ups for India’s upcoming white-ball tour of Australia.
India is scheduled to play three T20Is and three ODIs between February 15 and March 1, followed by a one-off Test in Perth from March 6 to 9, with the Test squad yet to be announced.
