Justin Langer Compares Ekana Pitch to WACA

Lucknow Super Giants’ struggles at home continued in IPL 2026 as head coach Justin Langer admitted his team has failed to adapt to the unique conditions at the Ekana Cricket Stadium.

Following their defeat to the Rajasthan Royals, Langer compared the surface to the iconic WACA ground in Perth, known for its pace and bounce.

Chasing a modest target of 160, LSG suffered a dramatic top-order collapse, slipping to 11/3 within the powerplay.

The early damage, caused by the pace duo of Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger, exposed the batting unit’s ongoing struggle against short-pitched deliveries. Key players like Rishabh Pant and Aiden Markram fell cheaply, highlighting the team’s discomfort against extra bounce.

Justin Langer described the Ekana pitch as “brilliant” but emphasized that it behaves very differently from typical Indian surfaces. Unlike slower tracks where batters dominate, Ekana offers pace, seam movement, and steep bounce, conditions that demand technical adjustment and discipline.

Since 2024, LSG have managed just six wins in 17 matches at their home venue, underlining a persistent issue with adaptability. Despite possessing a strong batting lineup on paper, the team has repeatedly failed to post or chase competitive totals at the ground this season.

However, Langer was quick to credit his bowling unit for keeping the team competitive. Pacers like Mohsin Khan and Prince Yadav have impressed with their consistency and control, with the coach even backing them as future India prospects.

Their ability to exploit the same conditions highlights a contrast between the bowling and batting departments.

Interestingly, opposition players echoed similar views about the surface. Ravindra Jadeja noted that the pitch was challenging and not a typical T20 batting track, adding that it tested both teams equally in terms of skill and mental strength.

Despite mounting losses, Langer defended the pitch and ground staff, insisting that the issue lies not with the surface but with the team’s inability to adjust. With crucial matches ahead in the IPL 2026 schedule, LSG must quickly find solutions to their home woes if they are to stay in contention for the playoffs.
