The issue, triggered by the ongoing conflict in West Asia, has created serious logistical hurdles for English cricket just weeks before the new season begins.
According to reports, the supply chain of Dukes balls has been significantly impacted due to disruptions in key transit routes. While the leather used in the balls is prepared in England, the stitching process takes place in the subcontinent.
The finished products are then transported back to the United Kingdom, typically via Middle Eastern air routes. However, with airspace restrictions and freight delays caused by the conflict, shipments have been severely affected.
Airlines have either reduced operations in the region or increased transportation costs, leading to delays and a sharp rise in expenses. Reports suggest that shipping costs have nearly tripled, while deliveries are struggling to reach on time. As a result, counties are now facing a shortage of essential match equipment.
The situation is particularly concerning with the County Championship set to begin in early April, involving 18 teams playing simultaneously. The crisis has also drawn attention to the overall cost of cricket equipment, with even tournaments like the IPL cricket ball prices due to similar supply chain challenges.
Teams are reportedly receiving only around half of their usual allocation of balls, which could directly impact match conditions, especially in four-day cricket, where frequent ball changes are necessary.
Officials have acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, with manufacturers confirming that stock is available but stuck due to transportation bottlenecks. Alternative shipping routes, including rerouting via other regions, are being explored, but no immediate solution has been finalized.
Adding to the complexity, counties have shown reluctance to switch to alternative balls such as Kookaburra, following mixed experiences in previous trials. This limits short-term options and increases pressure on resolving the current supply challenges.
