The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has banned Dasun Shanaka from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for one season after he breached his contract with Lahore Qalandars.
The decision came after Shanaka withdrew from the PSL 2026 season and joined the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a replacement for Sam Curran.
According to the PCB, his withdrawal was unilateral and violated both the Player Registration terms and the Tripartite Agreement.
Following a detailed review, the PCB declared Shanaka ineligible for PSL 2027, stressing that strict action is necessary to maintain the league’s contractual integrity.
Despite acknowledging Shanaka’s apology, the board maintained that the breach required disciplinary action.
Shanaka expressed regret in an official statement, apologizing to PSL fans and supporters of Lahore Qalandars. He clarified that he had no initial intention of joining another tournament and reiterated his respect for cricket fans in Pakistan.
The Sri Lankan all-rounder also stated his hope to return to the PSL in the future.
Financially, the move highlighted a major difference, as Shanaka left a PSL deal worth around $27,000 to accept an IPL contract reportedly valued at $214,000. However, he is yet to feature in a match this IPL season.
Shanaka is now among a growing list of players penalized for PSL withdrawals. Blessing Muzarabani was handed a two-year ban after leaving Islamabad United for Kolkata Knight Riders, while Corbin Bosch also faced suspension under similar circumstances.
The PCB’s firm stance signals its intent to protect the league’s credibility as competition between global T20 leagues continues to intensify.
