Cricket’s Olympic Return Begins with LA28 Stadium

International Cricket Council Hails LA28 Stadium Construction as Major Step for Cricket’s Olympic Return.

Cricket’s long-awaited return to the Olympic stage gathered momentum as construction officially began on a dedicated stadium in Pomona, California, ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) described the groundbreaking ceremony at the Fairplex Grounds as a landmark moment in the sport’s global expansion journey.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah called the development a “major milestone” for cricket and its estimated 2.5 billion fans worldwide. He emphasized that the Olympic platform offers a unique opportunity to elevate the sport’s global presence while inspiring new audiences beyond traditional cricketing nations.

The LA28 Olympics, scheduled from July 14 to 30, will mark cricket’s return to the Games after a 128-year absence, with the last appearance dating back to the 1900 Olympics. The upcoming edition will feature T20 competitions for both men and women, aligning with the format’s growing global appeal.

ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta highlighted that cricket’s inclusion in multi-sport events represents the beginning of a new era. Increased accessibility, wider broadcast reach, and stronger institutional backing are expected to accelerate the sport’s growth across emerging markets, particularly in the Americas.

The Pomona venue is not only central to the Olympic plan. Still, it will also play a key role in the build-up, hosting Major League Cricket matches, including fixtures involving the Los Angeles Knight Riders. This dual-purpose strategy reflects a broader vision to establish cricket as a sustainable sport in the United States.

Officials believe the Olympic spotlight could significantly boost participation levels, attract investment, and bridge the gap between established and developing cricketing nations. With record fan engagement across recent ICC events, the timing appears ideal for cricket to expand its global footprint.

As preparations continue, the LA28 project stands as more than just infrastructure development. It represents a defining moment in cricket’s evolution into a truly global sport, with the potential to inspire a new generation of players and fans across continents.
