The 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will commence on March 28 with a high-profile clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, in a significant departure from tradition, the tournament will not feature its customary opening ceremony.
The decision has been taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India as a mark of respect for the 11 individuals who lost their lives during a tragic incident in Bengaluru on June 4 last year.
According to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, the board chose to forgo all celebratory activities at the start of the tournament to honour the victims and their families.
This move reflects a more sensitive and responsible approach by the governing body, balancing the league’s entertainment aspect with empathy and social accountability. Traditionally, IPL opening ceremonies have been grand, star-studded events featuring leading celebrities and performers.
In 2025, for instance, Shah Rukh Khan headlined the opening ceremony in Kolkata, alongside several prominent artists.
Despite the absence of an opening spectacle this year, the BCCI has assured fans that the tournament’s celebratory spirit will remain intact. Plans are already underway for a grand closing ceremony, expected to take place on May 31, coinciding with the final.
Early indications suggest that Bengaluru could host the playoffs and the final, adding further significance to the venue. On the cricketing front, adjustments have also been made to Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s home schedule.
While the team typically plays all its home matches at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, two matches in IPL 2026 are set to be held at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur. This change follows safety reviews and logistical considerations after last year’s incident.
The decision to skip the opening ceremony has received mixed reactions. While many fans have appreciated the gesture as a respectful tribute, others have expressed disappointment over the absence of the league’s traditional festive start.
Nonetheless, the move underscores the league’s evolving priorities, where respect and responsibility take precedence alongside entertainment.
