The Board of Control for Cricket in India has introduced a significant rule change for IPL 2026, tightening restrictions on the movement of substitute and benched players during matches. The move is aimed at improving on-field discipline and making match operations more efficient.
Under the updated guidelines, only the 16 players named in the official match squad are allowed to step onto the field. Players who are not part of this group must remain in the dugout and are not permitted to move near the boundary line or LED advertising boards.
New Restrictions on Substitute Players
As per the new rule, only a maximum of five substitute players wearing training bibs can be present near the boundary at any given time. These players are allowed to carry drinks, relay messages, or retrieve the ball. All other squad members must stay off the field.
Previously, IPL teams, which typically consist of around 25 players, had more flexibility, with several non-playing members assisting during matches. The new directive strictly limits such involvement.
Changes to Match Conditions
The rule is seen as a stricter enforcement of existing clauses in the Match Playing Conditions, particularly those governing substitute fielders and player conduct.
While substitutes were earlier allowed limited access for specific tasks, the updated framework reduces unnecessary movement around the field.
