The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new set of practice guidelines for franchises ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. The updated rules aim to ensure fair preparation for all teams while protecting the quality of pitches and practice facilities across tournament venues.
One of the most significant changes involves the use of practice nets. According to the new directives, teams will no longer be allowed to train on nets or practice pitches previously used by another franchise.
Each team must be provided with freshly prepared nets during their allocated practice sessions. The move is intended to maintain consistent playing conditions and prevent any advantage that could arise from using worn practice surfaces.
The guidelines further clarify that even if practice sessions are scheduled at different times, the second team will not be permitted to use nets already used by the first team. Additionally, if a team finishes its practice earlier than scheduled, the opposing side will still not be allowed to utilize the same range-hitting wicket or training area.
Limits on Practice Matches
The BCCI has also placed restrictions on the number and duration of practice matches before the season begins. Each franchise will be allowed to play a maximum of two practice matches, and prior approval from the board will be required.
If a practice match is conducted under floodlights, its duration cannot exceed three and a half hours. These matches must take place on side wickets rather than the main pitch.
Protection of Match Pitches
Another important regulation focuses on preserving the main square used for official matches. The board has prohibited practice sessions or practice matches on the main match pitch until four days before a team’s first home fixture of the season. This rule is aimed at ensuring that the playing surface remains in optimal condition for competitive games.
Operational Responsibilities for Franchises
The new guidelines also clarify logistical responsibilities during training sessions. Home franchises will be responsible for arranging security, medical support, catering services, and other essential facilities during practice sessions. However, visiting teams will manage some minor requirements independently during their training periods.
With the Indian Premier League 2026 season approaching, the BCCI’s updated regulations are expected to create more standardized and fair preparation conditions for all franchises while preserving pitch quality throughout the tournament.
