BCB Bans Monjurul Islam from Cricket

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially banned former national cricketer Monjurul Islam from all forms of cricket-related activities under its jurisdiction. The decision was taken during a board meeting held on Sunday following the findings of an independent inquiry committee.

The action comes after former Bangladesh women’s national team captain Jahanara Alam filed a complaint accusing Monjurul Islam of inappropriate behaviour and harassment during the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup.

Jahanara had publicly raised the allegations in an interview last November, prompting the BCB to launch an independent investigation.

According to the board’s official statement, the inquiry committee examined four separate allegations.

While two of the claims could not be substantiated due to insufficient evidence, the committee found prima facie evidence of inappropriate conduct in the remaining two allegations.

The findings marked a major development in the Bangladesh cricketer sexual assault case, prompting the BCB to impose a complete ban on Monjurul Islam from any direct or indirect involvement in cricket activities under its jurisdiction.

Monjurul, a former left-arm pacer, had served as a selector and manager of the Bangladesh women’s cricket team. His contractual tenure with the BCB ended on June 30, 2025.

The committee observed that certain actions were inconsistent with professional standards and fell within the definition of misconduct and harassment under applicable guidelines.

In its statement, the BCB reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and misconduct. The board also confirmed that it is reviewing additional recommendations from the inquiry committee and may take further action if necessary.

Apart from the ban decision, several other important resolutions were taken during the board meeting. The tenure of national selection panel chairman Gazi Ashraf Hossain was extended by one month as the board works on appointing his successor. His original two-year term was set to conclude at the end of February.

Additionally, the BCB approved the schedule for the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The franchise-based tournament is set to run from April 4 to April 14, with matches scheduled in Dhaka and Chattogram. This will mark the first-ever women’s franchise league in Bangladesh cricket history.

The board also extended congratulations to the newly elected Prime Minister, expressing confidence in policies that will strengthen sports development across the country.

The latest developments highlight the BCB’s commitment to accountability and professional standards within Bangladesh cricket, particularly in safeguarding players and maintaining integrity in the sport.
