Ashleigh Gardner Talks Gujarat Giants WPL 2026

After a challenging start to their Women’s Premier League journey, Gujarat Giants head into WPL 2026 with renewed belief, stronger depth, and a clear long-term vision.

With a revamped squad and an experienced support staff, the franchise believes it is finally ready to challenge for its maiden WPL title.

The Giants reached the playoffs for the first time last season under new head coach Michael Klinger, marking a significant step forward for the franchise.

Klinger, who took over from Rachael Haynes, credited the team’s progress to a successful auction strategy and growing interest in women’s cricket.

“I’m really enjoying coaching in the women’s game. After India’s World Cup success, there’s so much attention on the sport,” Klinger said, expressing confidence in the squad assembled for 2026.

Captain Ashleigh Gardner echoed those sentiments, describing the current group as the most balanced Gujarat Giants squad so far.

Appointed captain in 2025, Gardner impressed both as a leader and an all-round performer, guiding the team to its first knockout appearance.

“Last season helped me grow as a captain. I want to stay true to myself and bring a calm presence to the team,” Gardner said, adding that confidence within the group continues to rise.

One of the biggest boosts for the Giants is the arrival of Indian pace spearhead Renuka Singh, who joins the squad following India’s World Cup triumph. While expectations are high, Renuka stressed the importance of staying grounded.

“Overconfidence can hurt. Every tournament is a fresh start and I want to take it one game at a time,” she said.

Gujarat’s recruitment at the auction focused heavily on all-round depth. New Zealand star Sophie Devine was the marquee signing, while Georgia Wareham, Kim Garth, Kanika Ahuja, and Ayushi Soni add flexibility across departments.

The Indian core has also been strengthened with the return of Bharti Fulmali, Kashvee Gautam, and Tanuja Kanwar.

The franchise continues to back young talent, particularly Kashvee Gautam, who has been retained despite injury setbacks. Management believes sustained investment and continuity are key to long-term success in the WPL.
