Adam Milne Out of T20 World Cup, Jamieson Named In Squad

New Zealand have suffered a significant setback ahead of the T20 World Cup after fast bowler Adam Milne was ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury.

The experienced pacer sustained a torn left hamstring while playing for Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the ongoing SA20 competition, ruling him out of contention just weeks before the global event.

Milne picked up the injury on January 18 during his first over against MI Cape Town. Subsequent scans confirmed the severity of the tear, forcing New Zealand Cricket to make an immediate change to their World Cup squad.

Kyle Jamieson, who was initially named as a travelling reserve, has now been promoted to the main squad as Milne’s replacement.

The timing of Milne’s injury comes as a major blow for New Zealand, who have already been grappling with multiple fitness concerns within their pace department.

Will O’Rourke, Blair Tickner, Nathan Smith and Ben Sears are all currently sidelined with injuries, while Lockie Ferguson continues his recovery from a calf issue.

Ferguson is not part of the ongoing series against India and may miss portions of the World Cup due to paternity leave, alongside Matt Henry.

Milne had been in impressive form in the SA20, picking up 11 wickets at an average of 16.27 with an economy rate of 7.61 across eight matches.

His performances suggested he was returning to his best at the right time, making his absence even more disappointing for the team management.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed his sympathy for Milne, acknowledging the effort the pacer had put in ahead of the tournament.

Walter said the squad was “gutted” for Milne, adding that the injury was unfortunate timing after the bowler had worked tirelessly to regain peak fitness.

On a positive note, Jamieson’s inclusion provides New Zealand with a like-for-like pace option. The tall, fast bowler is already part of the squad touring India and has impressed since returning to international cricket following a long-term back injury.

Earlier this month, Jamieson delivered a career-best spell of 4 for 41 in an ODI against India, underlining his readiness for the global stage.

Squads can be freely amended until January 31; after this date, ICC approval will be required for any replacements. New Zealand are also expected to name another travelling reserve ahead of the tournament.

The Black Caps begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Afghanistan on February 8 in Chennai, following a warm-up match against the USA on February 6 in Mumbai.

Despite the injury setbacks, New Zealand will hope their depth and experience help them remain strong contenders.
