SRK Faces Criticism Over KKR Player Pick

The inclusion of Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman in the Kolkata Knight Riders squad for the 2026 IPL season has sparked a widespread public debate, bringing together the worlds of franchise cricket, geopolitics, and social sentiment.

The discussion has emerged amid reports of violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, which have triggered protests and strong reactions in parts of India.

Several religious and political figures have questioned the timing and moral implications of signing a Bangladeshi player under such circumstances.

Spiritual leaders, including Devkinandan Thakur and Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, have criticised KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan and called for the cricketer’s removal from the squad.

Suggestions have also been made that the auction fee be redirected towards humanitarian relief, reflecting the emotional intensity surrounding the issue.

The rhetoric intensified when BJP leader Sangeet Singh Som made controversial remarks against Shah Rukh Khan, demanding stricter measures against Bangladeshi participation in the IPL.

Some voices have argued that the league should reconsider allowing players from countries facing allegations of human rights violations, placing the BCCI and franchise management under mounting public pressure.

However, opposition leaders and several religious organisations have pushed back strongly, defending the player and the franchise. Congress leaders have pointed out that foreign player participation in the IPL operates under established legal and regulatory frameworks approved by the Indian government and cricket authorities.

They emphasised that individual athletes should not be held accountable for political developments in their home countries.

Muslim religious leaders have also condemned the targeting of Shah Rukh Khan and Mustafizur Rahman, calling the criticism divisive and contrary to India’s pluralistic values.

Amid the controversy, Mustafizur Rahman’s cricketing credentials remain undisputed. The 30-year-old left-arm pacer, renowned for his deceptive cutters and effectiveness in death overs, has been a consistent performer in the IPL since his debut in 2016.

While his on-field abilities are well recognised, the ongoing debate has placed his participation at the centre of a broader conversation on the intersection of sport, politics, and diplomacy.

As of now, neither the KKR management nor the IPL authorities has issued an official statement. With the tournament approaching, the situation remains fluid, leaving uncertainty over how the franchise and governing bodies will navigate the growing public and political scrutiny.
