MS Dhoni Behind Jharkhand SMAT Win

Jharkhand’s maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) title in the 2025-26 season is more than just a domestic victory; it is a masterclass in strategic restructuring and mentorship.

While the silverware was secured under the floodlights of the MCA Stadium in Pune, the blueprint for success was drafted months earlier in Ranchi, under the quiet but profound guidance of MS Dhoni.

A Structural Reset Guided by ‘Captain Cool’

Before the season commenced, the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) underwent a significant administrative overhaul.

Former India spinner Shahbaz Nadeem and Saurabh Tiwary took on leadership roles as joint secretary and secretary, respectively.

According to Nadeem, every major decision from the appointment of the coaching staff to the long-term roadmap was made in consultation with MS Dhoni.

Acting on Dhoni’s advice, the association prioritized local expertise over high-profile external names, appointing Ratan Kumar as head coach.

This move fostered a sense of stability and belonging within the squad. Dhoni’s involvement was not merely symbolic; he reportedly followed every match, tracking the individual statistics and progress of every domestic player in the state.

Ishan Kishan: Leading the Charge

The explosive leadership of Ishan Kishan defined the campaign. Following the path blazed by Dhoni, Kishan channeled an aggressive, modern T20 style that saw Jharkhand dominate the tournament.

He finished as the leading run-scorer with 517 runs in 10 innings, boasting a staggering strike rate of 197.32.

His century in the final (101 off 49 balls) not only equaled the record for the most centuries in SMAT history but also earned him a recall to India’s T20 squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup

His ability to balance the weight of captaincy with individual brilliance was reminiscent of the very mentor guiding the team from the background.

Total Dominance on the Field

Jharkhand’s performance was a testament to meticulous preparation. They won 10 out of 11 games, finishing at the top of a group that included powerhouses like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi. Key contributors included:

  • Anukul Roy: Awarded ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his dual impact, scoring 303 runs and claiming 19 wickets.
  • Kumar Kushagra: Proved to be a lethal finisher, most notably with his 38-ball 81 in the final.
  • Sushant Mishra: Spearheaded the bowling attack, ensuring the opposition could never chase down the daunting targets set by the batsmen.

In the final against Haryana, Jharkhand posted a massive 262/3, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 tournament final, eventually securing a 69-run victory.

The Legacy Continues

Even years after his international retirement, MS Dhoni remains the heartbeat of Jharkhand cricket.

By analyzing players’ strengths and weaknesses and acting as a sounding board for the JSCA, he has ensured that the state’s “punching above its weight” tag is replaced by the status of national champions. This victory signals the dawn of a new era for Jharkhand, where modern aggression meets legendary wisdom.
