Cricket Australia has officially announced its men’s central contract list for the 2026–27 season, trimming the squad from 23 to 21 players as part of a strategic shift toward Test-focused cricket.
The updated list reflects a balance between rewarding recent performances and preparing for a demanding international schedule.
One of the biggest highlights is the inclusion of Brendan Doggett and Jake Weatherald, both of whom earned their maiden national contracts after impressive outings during the Ashes. Their selection signals a clear intent to invest in players who have delivered under high-pressure conditions.

Experienced campaigners Michael Neser and Todd Murphy have also been recalled, strengthening Australia’s depth ahead of a packed calendar that includes tours to South Africa and India, along with a historic Ashes cycle.
However, several notable omissions have grabbed attention. Fast bowler Jhye Richardson, despite recent appearances, has been left out.
He is joined by Lance Morris, Sam Konstas, and white-ball specialist Glenn Maxwell, highlighting a shift toward red-ball priorities. Batter Matt Short is another surprising exclusion.
Selection chief George Bailey stated that the contracts are designed to reward consistency while aligning with Australia’s upcoming Test-heavy schedule, which could see the team play nearly 20 matches in a year.
