Brad Haddin Named NSW Head Coach

Former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has been appointed as the new head coach of the New South Wales Blues, marking a significant leadership shift for one of Australia’s most successful domestic sides.

Haddin replaces Greg Shipperd, whose tenure ended earlier this year despite guiding the team to a recent One-Day Cup triumph. However, New South Wales’ struggles in the Sheffield Shield, where they finished outside the top positions, remain a key concern.

The state has not won the Shield since the 2019-20 season, and there is growing pressure to restore its dominance in red-ball cricket.

The 48-year-old brings extensive experience, both as a player and coach. Having represented Australia in 66 Tests, 126 ODIs, and 34 T20Is, Haddin was known for his aggressive leadership and competitive mindset.

In coaching, he has served as an assistant with the Australian national team and in franchise cricket, including roles with Sunrisers Hyderabad and currently with Punjab Kings in the IPL.

Haddin is set to officially take charge in June ahead of the pre-season. His appointment signals a fresh direction, with expectations that he will rebuild the team’s competitive edge and strengthen its player development system.

In recent years, New South Wales has faced criticism for not producing as many international-level players as it once did, a challenge Haddin has openly acknowledged.

I believe there is strong talent in the system, but we need to raise standards and bring back a clear identity,” Haddin said, emphasizing his vision to re-establish a winning culture.

The transition has not been without controversy. Assistant coaches Ali de Winter and Shawn Bradstreet were informed they would not continue, a decision that drew criticism from former players. However, the management appears committed to a broader restructuring strategy.

Importantly, Brad Haddin will focus solely on his role with New South Wales and will not take up coaching positions in the Big Bash League, including with teams like Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder, even as discussions around a potential BBL opener in India continue to gather attention.
