Gujarat Titans Appoint Hayden as Coach for IPL 2026

The Gujarat Titans have appointed former Australian opener Matthew Hayden as their new batting coach ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. The franchise confirmed the announcement on Tuesday as the team continues to strengthen its support staff ahead of the upcoming tournament.

Hayden, one of the most dominant opening batters of his generation, brings extensive international experience to the Ahmedabad-based franchise. The former Australian star represented his country in 273 international matches and scored more than 15,000 runs across formats.

Known for his aggressive approach and powerful stroke play, Hayden played a key role in shaping modern white-ball batting during his playing career.

New Role After Years as Broadcaster

Although Hayden has been closely associated with the IPL as a television commentator in recent years, the 2026 season will mark his first major coaching assignment in the tournament.

During his playing days, Hayden represented the Chennai Super Kings between 2008 and 2010. His most memorable IPL season came in 2009 when he won the Orange Cap as the tournament’s highest run-scorer.

The appointment of Matthew Hayden further strengthens the coaching setup of the Gujarat Titans, highlighting how experienced IPL team coaches play a crucial role in shaping batting strategies and mentoring young players in the Indian Premier League.

“Good batting applies pressure. Great batting owns the game. That’s the standard we want to set at Gujarat Titans,” Hayden said following his appointment.

Strengthening the Coaching Setup

Hayden will join the coaching staff led by head coach Ashish Nehra and work closely with several key players in the squad. The Titans’ batting lineup includes captain Shubman Gill, rising star Sai Sudharsan, England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler, and New Zealand power-hitter Glenn Phillips.

Gujarat Titans Director of Cricket Vikram Solanki described Hayden’s arrival as an important step in the franchise’s long-term plans. According to Solanki, Hayden’s experience and ability to mentor young players will be crucial in shaping the team’s batting approach in the coming seasons.

Titans Aim for Another Title Push

The Titans, who won the IPL title in 2022, are aiming to return to championship contention in the upcoming season. The team finished third in the 2025 league stage but exited the tournament in the Eliminator.

With the IPL 2026 season scheduled to begin in late March, the addition of Hayden is expected to bring fresh tactical insights and batting expertise to the squad. His presence in the coaching group could play a key role as the Gujarat Titans prepare for another strong campaign in the league.
