Gautam Gambhir Reveals 2027 ODI World Cup Plan

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has revealed that the team’s roadmap for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 will be finalized soon after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League 2026 season.

The announcement came shortly after India successfully defended their title at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, shifting the team’s focus toward the next major global challenge.

Speaking about India’s long-term planning, Gambhir emphasized the importance of beginning preparations early. According to the head coach, the modern international calendar offers limited opportunities to play One Day Internationals, making strategic planning crucial for a successful campaign in the upcoming World Cup.

“The planning for the 2027 World Cup will start after the IPL. There are roughly 25 to 30 ODIs scheduled before the tournament. Since this format is not played frequently, it is important that we start preparing as early as possible,” Gambhir explained.

The 2027 edition of the ODI World Cup will primarily take place in South Africa, with matches also hosted in Zimbabwe and Namibia. The challenging pace and bounce of South African pitches are expected to play a major role in shaping team strategies.

Gambhir acknowledged that the playing conditions will be very different from the subcontinent and will require careful selection of players who can adapt to those environments.

He further noted that the coming months will be critical in testing various combinations and identifying cricketers capable of delivering in demanding overseas conditions. The coaching staff and national selectors are expected to closely monitor player performances before finalizing the squad blueprint.

India’s senior players, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, will also remain under focus as the team transitions into its World Cup preparation phase. India will return to ODI action with a three-match series against the Afghanistan national cricket team before traveling to face the England cricket team in another limited-overs assignment.

These matches are expected to provide valuable insights into player form, team balance, and tactical strategies. Gambhir believes that the results and performances in the next set of ODIs will significantly influence India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup.

With the IPL 2026 season approaching, both senior stars and emerging players will have an opportunity to strengthen their case for selection. By the time the tournament concludes, the Indian team management aims to have a clear blueprint in place for their campaign at the 2027 ODI World Cup.
