Gavaskar Warns India Ahead of Do-or-Die vs West Indies

Ahead of India’s critical T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights match against the West Indies on March 1 at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has urged the team to approach the game with caution and strategy.

Speaking after India’s emphatic 72-run victory over Zimbabwe in Chennai, Gavaskar highlighted the need to play smart following a heavy defeat to South Africa, which dented India’s Net Run Rate.

West Indies cannot be taken lightly,” Gavaskar said. Their batters start attacking from ball one and punish mistakes at the right time. India must devise plans that they do not expect and execute them flawlessly.

The former legend also praised India’s response against Zimbabwe, where the Men in Blue posted 256 runs, their highest T20 World Cup team total. Key contributions from Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya helped India dominate Zimbabwe, setting up a high-stakes clash against the Caribbean side.

Gavaskar singled out Sanju Samson for his impressive cameo, noting his powerful sixes and aggressive approach at the top. “That back-foot six over long off was exceptional. Even in a short innings, Samson provided crucial momentum,” he said.

Gavaskar also lauded Abhishek Sharma’s comeback, describing his composed half-century as a sign of maturity and adaptability.

On the bowling front, Gavaskar felt India’s unit looked sharper compared to the South Africa game, highlighting Axar Patel for his tight spells and critical wicket-taking ability. “The bowling improved significantly, and building a big total gave confidence to the bowlers,” he added.

Gavaskar emphasized that Sunday’s match would require India to combine aggressive batting with tactical bowling. The West Indies are in top form. Their bowlers execute plans well, and their batters attack from the first ball. India must outthink them and adapt quickly,” he noted.

With a semifinal berth on the line, this match is effectively a must-win for India. Gavaskar’s advice underscores the importance of learning from past mistakes, building on recent successes, and approaching the West Indies challenge with both caution and confidence.

Fans and analysts alike expect a thrilling contest at Eden Gardens, where strategy, skill, and composure will determine whether India progresses to the semifinals or faces elimination.
