BCCI Confirms Delay in IPL 2026 Schedule

The delay in the announcement of the IPL 2026 schedule has been officially clarified by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

According to senior board officials, upcoming state elections and venue readiness issues are the primary reasons behind the hold-up.

The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League is set to run from March 26 to May 31, 2026. However, with less than two months remaining, the full fixture list has not yet been released, creating uncertainty among franchises and fans.

Elections Impacting Scheduling Plans

State assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Assam are expected to overlap with the early phase of IPL 2026.

A BCCI official confirmed that local police forces, who are responsible for match security, will be heavily deployed for election duties and vote counting.

This presents a significant logistical challenge. If match dates clash with polling or counting days, venues may not receive adequate security cover. As a result, the BCCI is considering releasing the schedule in two phases while awaiting final confirmation from state authorities.

The board is in continuous coordination with government agencies to avoid last-minute disruptions that could affect team travel, broadcasting commitments, and fan attendance.

CSK, KKR, and RR Face Venue Uncertainty

Franchises like Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders are likely to be impacted due to the election overlap in their respective states.

Reports suggest KKR is exploring alternative venues and has held discussions with the Odisha Cricket Association to potentially host matches at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium. The Rajasthan Royals have reportedly sought an indemnity waiver from the Rajasthan State Sports Council following safety concerns flagged in an independent audit report.

Discussions are ongoing with the Maharashtra Cricket Association to shift matches to Pune if required.

World Cup Venue Preparation Also a Factor

Another key issue is venue readiness following the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup, which concludes on March 8. Five IPL venues, including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, and Ahmedabad, are currently hosting World Cup matches.

Transitioning stadiums from global tournament mode to IPL readiness requires time for pitch restoration, branding changes, broadcast setup, and logistical adjustments.

What Happens Next

The BCCI is expected to finalise the IPL 2026 schedule once election dates and security clearances are officially confirmed. The board aims to avoid mid-season venue changes that could disrupt competitive balance.

With multiple logistical variables in play, the delay appears to be a strategic decision focused on safety, operational efficiency, and long-term tournament credibility rather than mismanagement.
