Glenn Maxwell Extends Melbourne Stars Contract

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has reaffirmed his long-term commitment to the Melbourne Stars after signing a new two-year contract in the Big Bash League (BBL), providing the franchise with a major boost ahead of the upcoming season.

The agreement was finalised just before the BBL’s contracting embargo came into effect, shutting down any speculation over Maxwell’s immediate future.

The extension means Maxwell will continue representing the Stars well beyond his late thirties, underlining both his loyalty to the club and the franchise’s belief in his leadership and experience.

A cornerstone of the Stars since BBL 02, Maxwell has become one of the most influential figures in the league’s history, sitting as the third-highest run-scorer overall with more than 3,000 runs across 120-plus appearances.

Despite his stature in the competition, the most recent season proved challenging for the 37-year-old.

Maxwell struggled for consistency, managing only 76 runs in eight innings while contributing two wickets with the ball.

However, the Stars remained keen to retain their talisman, particularly after interest from rival club Sydney Thunder, who reportedly put forward a lucrative offer.

Speaking after signing the one-year deal Warner underlined his commitment to the side and his confidence in the team’s direction.

He said the group is progressing steadily and has the potential to deliver consistent results over the upcoming season.

For Melbourne, retaining Maxwell is a statement of intent. The Stars remain the only BBL franchise yet to lift the trophy, having once again fallen short last season with a Knockout-stage exit after a promising start to the campaign.

Club officials believe stability around senior players will be key as they aim to convert potential into silverware.

High Performance Manager Clint McKay praised Maxwell’s decision, describing his commitment as invaluable for both on-field performances and off-field leadership.

McKay also confirmed the club’s focus on balancing experience with youth, as evidenced by contract extensions for emerging talents.

Among them is left-handed batter Campbell Kellaway, who has been rewarded with a two-year deal after an encouraging season in which he featured in every match and provided solidity at the top of the order.

Young all-rounder Austin Anlezark has also secured a contract extension, further highlighting the Stars’ long-term planning.

With the player movement window now open, Melbourne Stars enter the next phase of the BBL cycle with renewed stability, a strong core, and their most iconic player firmly committed to another push for an elusive maiden title.
