David Warner Signs One-Year Deal with Sydney Thunder

Sydney Thunder have secured a major boost ahead of the BBL 2026–27 season, confirming that former Australia opener David Warner has signed a one-year contract extension.

Despite a disappointing campaign for the franchise, the experienced left-hander will continue to lead the side, offering stability and firepower at the top of the order.

Warner was the standout performer in the BBL 2025–26 season, finishing as the tournament’s leading run-scorer. He piled up 433 runs at a remarkable average of 86.60 and an explosive strike rate of 154.09.

His season included two unbeaten centuries, underlining his ability to single-handedly keep Sydney Thunder competitive during a difficult year for the team.

In his final four innings alone, Warner registered scores of 130 not out, 67 not out, 82, and 110 not out, highlighting his consistency and class.

Speaking after committing his future to the club, Warner admitted the season was challenging but insisted the team is far better than what the results suggested.

The veteran batter praised the unwavering support of Thunder fans, revealing that their backing played a significant role in his decision to stay on.

Warner added that preparations for a stronger campaign are already underway, with reviews and planning in progress ahead of the BBL 2026–27 season.

Sydney Thunder general manager Trent Copeland described Warner’s retention as an easy decision, calling him one of the finest T20 batters of the modern era.

Copeland highlighted Warner’s elite fitness levels, leadership qualities, and relentless hunger to improve after a disappointing team performance.

According to Copeland, Warner’s presence remains invaluable both on the field and inside the dressing room.

The new deal also means Warner will continue his BBL career beyond the age of 40, further cementing his legacy as one of the competition’s most influential players.

He remains the fourth-highest run-scorer in T20 history and was comfortably Thunder’s top performer last season, well ahead of Matthew Gilkes and Sam Billings.

While Sydney Thunder finished at the bottom of the table for the second time in three seasons, Warner’s individual brilliance provided rare positives.

Ellis is set to miss the upcoming Big Bash League matches, dealing another blow to the squad as injury concerns continue to mount.

The franchise will now look to build a more balanced squad around their captain as the BBL contracting embargo approaches, followed by the player movement window.

With Warner committed for another season, Sydney Thunder will be hoping his form and leadership can inspire a strong turnaround and push the side back into finals contention in BBL 2026–27.
